Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship, such as the Harford County Electrical Apprenticeship Program, offers the opportunity to earn a paycheck while building valuable hands-on skills and preparing for a long-term career in the electrical industry. Through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world job experience, apprentices gain the knowledge, confidence, and training needed to succeed in a high-demand trade.

HCECA apprentices are required to gain employment with one of our member electrical contractors.

GI Bill® Benefits for Veteran Apprentices

The Harford County Electrical Apprenticeship Program is approved for VA education benefits, making it an excellent pathway for veterans transitioning into civilian careers. Veterans may be eligible to use GI Bill® benefits to help cover expenses such as housing, books, and supplies, while participating in apprenticeship programs. Am I Eligible for Education Benefits?

You may be eligible for GI Bill® education benefits if you qualify for VA education assistance and are pursuing a career such as an electrician, that includes approved on-the-job training or apprenticeship opportunities.

Who May Qualify?

Education benefits may be available to:

  • Veterans
  • Eligible spouses and dependents using benefits through the Fry Scholarship or the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) Program
  • Dependents using transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits (Chapter 33)

Important Information

Certain restrictions apply. Active-duty service members and spouses using transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits are generally not eligible to receive apprenticeship or on-the-job training benefits while the service member remains on active duty. Eligibility requirements may vary based on your specific VA education program and service history.

“This was my first time using the GI Bill and I learned a lot through this process; such as it will not directly pay for tuition due to the fact your GI Bill is being used for an apprenticeship rather than regular college classes. However, you’ll still receive a monthly housing allowance along with a book allowance. HCECA does a good job with submitting your OJT hours to the VA in a timely manner so you receive your housing allowance on time every month. Overall I’ve had a good experience while using the GI Bill in the HCECA Apprenticeship program!”
